Ring of Fire in Odessa, Texas
We recorded “Ring of Fire” Solar Eclipse as it traveled across the United States on Oct. 14, 2023, from Oregon to Texas. This video was recorded in Odessa, Texas. A solar eclipse occurs when the Moon passes directly in front of the Sun. When the Moon appears too small to completely cover the Sun’s surface, a Ring of Fire in the sky apprears, called an Annular Solar Eclipse. This was a fun celestial / astronomy event to share with family and friends.
Celestial Astronomy Event
The whole family had a great time viewing this event. We saw the Sun as a thin ring. It was almost but not completely eclipsed by the Moon. Below you can see the stages of this celestial event. You can see behind the scenes: the family, our cat, and the camera we used. We used the Sony a7iv camera for the photography and we used the Sony FDR-AX700 4k camcorder.
Be Careful, use Solar Filters
First protect your eyes and equipment. We ordered eye protection that is made specifally for viewing a solar eclipse. Then we researched specific filters for our cameras. Pointing your camera at the sun is the equivalent of using a magnifying glass heating up and damaging your equipment. Camera equipment is very expensive if you have to repair or replace it.
Eye Protection
For eye protection we ordered “Eclipse Glasses” that have “ISO 2312-2” or “ISO 12312-2:2015” listed. These glasses meet the international safety standard to protect your eyes. These glasses reduce visible sunlight to safe and comfortable levels. Again, it’s very important to protect your eye vision. You only have one pair of eyes!
Camera Protection
For camera protection we ordered camera filters that protect your camera from intense direct light. We ordered filters for both cell phone cameras and photography/video cameras. We ordered a ND100000 Optical Glass filter for the phography camera. For the cell phones and camcorder, we ordered smartphone solar imaging filters that can be used for phones and video cameras. These filters protect the camera’s imaging sensor. These also help you get correct exposure for your photos and videos.
Next year a total solar eclipse will occur April 8, 2024, see you then! Thanks for reading and watching. This is Lightning Bilt Creative Studio.
